“Praising and prodding Congress, President Barack Obama on Wednesday said a vast reform of the nation’s health insurance system is required to head off instability to families, industry and the government itself.

‘Deferring reform is nothing more than defending the status quo _ and those who would oppose our efforts should take a hard look at just what it is they’re defending,’ Obama said in the Rose Garden, pushing for landmark bills to get through the House and Senate before Congress’ August recess.

Putting more of his own political stake behind the effort each day, Obama outlined the troubles with the U.S. approach to health care coverage, with an emphasis on the cost to consumers. He spoke of soaring premiums, deductibles and out-of-pocket costs and promised with reform, ‘You’ll save money.’”

” WASHINGTON, July 14 (Reuters) – U.S. House leaders vowed to get a healthcare bill passed before the August recess, after unveiling a sweeping proposal to revamp the healthcare system that includes tax hikes on couples earning more than $350,000 and a new government-run health plan option.

‘We cannot go home for a recess unless the House and the Senate’ act on healthcare, said Henry Waxman, chairman of the Energy and Commerce committee, which worked on the bill.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi vowed to complete a vote on the bill before the August recess.”

“President Barack Obama may rely only on Democrats to push health-care legislation through the U.S. Congress if Republican opposition doesn’t yield soon, two of the president’s top advisers said.

‘Ultimately, this is not about a process, it’s about results,’ David Axelrod, Obama’s senior political strategist, said during an interview in his White House office. ‘If we’re going to get this thing done, obviously time is a-wasting.’

Both Axelrod and White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel said taking a partisan route to enacting major health-care legislation isn’t the president’s preferred choice. Yet in separate interviews, each man left that option open.

‘We’d like to do it with the votes of members of both parties,” Axelrod said. “But the worst result would be to not get health-care reform done.’”

“Steny Hoyer, a Maryland Democrat, is the majority leader in the US House of Representatives. At a news conference last week, he was talking about the health-care overhaul now being drafted on Capitol Hill, and a reporter asked whether he would support a pledge committing members of Congress to read the bill before voting on it, and to make the full text of the legislation available to the public online for 72 hours before the vote takes place.

The majority leader found the idea of the pledge humorous, laughing as he responded to the question. ‘I’m laughing because …I don’t know how long this bill is going to be, but it’s going to be a very long bill,’ he said.”

“Supporters of the President’s government takeover of health care have been very careful to not mention the word abortion. They use terms like family planning and reproductive healthcare, but it is becoming harder for them to hide the fact that under a government takeover of health care, taxpayers would be forced to fund abortion for the first time in over 3 decades.”

John Stossel reports the follow at Jewish World Review:

“The statist establishment would love a single-payer health-care system like Canada’s if it were politically achievable. Barack Obama said that if we were starting from scratch, single payer is what he’d back. But, thankfully, Americans are still libertarian enough to cringe at turning the medical system entirely over to government.

So with single payer out of reach, the fans of government control have grabbed for second best: the “public option.” This would be government-run health insurance that would “compete” with private insurance. (It wouldn’t compete fairly because it could do something no private firm can do: milk the captive taxpayers.) But the public option is proving hard to get. Even some Democrats are nervous about it.”

Charles Hurt, David Seifman and Jennifer Fermino of the New York Post, wrote an incredible article about the cost of the of the Democrats’ Health Care plan to New Yorkers.

“Congressional plans to fund a massive health-care overhaul could have a job-killing effect on New York, creating a tax rate of nearly 60 percent for the state’s top earners and possibly pressuring small-business owners to shed workers.

New York’s top income bracket could reach as high as 57 percent — rates not seen in three decades — to pay for the massive health coverage proposed by House Democrats this week.”

Can someone please point me to a verified (by the USGPO) copy of HR 3200 that contains Sec. 440? The verified copy I have jumps from Sec 431 to Sec 441. Don’t get me wrong – I am completely against this whole mess and the agenda being rammed down our throats – but it concerns me that intelligent arguments against this bill may not be mounted because of misinformation being circulated. Thanks

It is very difficult to follow the convoluted organization of this monsterous bill. Section 440 is actually a part of

SEC. 1904. “GRANTS TO STATES FOR QUALITY HOME VISITATION PROGRAMS FOR FAMILIES WITH YOUNG CHILDREN AND FAMILIES EXPECTING CHILDREN.”

Part B of title IV of the Social Security Act (42 U.S.C. 621-629i) is amended by adding at the end the following:CommentsClose CommentsPermalink

‘Subpart 3–Support for Quality Home Visitation Programs

‘SEC. 440. HOME VISITATION PROGRAMS FOR FAMILIES WITH YOUNG CHILDREN AND FAMILIES EXPECTING CHILDREN.

Notice the open quote at the beginning of the reference to SEC. 440. According to the article, This language was inserted from a failed bill from last year. There is a link at the bottom of the article that will take you right ot section 1903 and thus section 440 at the official site “http://www.opencongress.org”
